Story by Matt Pangrac

Luke Clausen is one of the most accomplished anglers in professional bass fishing.  He began fishing the B.A.S.S. Western Invitationals in 2000 at the age of 21, and quickly made his presence felt on the West Coast with four Top 20 finishes in Western Invitationals and Western Opens in his first two years.

He began fishing the FLW Tour in 2004, finishing the season in 26th place in the Angler Of the Year standings and qualifying for the 2004 FLW Tour Championship (Forrest Wood Cup) on Logan Martin Lake.  Clausen topped the field, and at the age of 26 became one of the youngest Cup champions in history.

Clausen fished the FLW Tour, Bassmaster Tour and Elite 50s in 2005.  He qualified for the 2006 Bassmaster Classic on Lake Toho, and once again finished in 1st place at a championship event.  By the age of 27, the Washington pro had lifted both the Forrest Wood Cup and the Bassmaster Classic trophy.

From 2006-2013, Clausen fished the FLW Tour and qualified for the Forrest Wood Cup in eight consecutive seasons while posting five Top 20 finishes in the AOY standings during that time period. He returned to B.A.S.S. in 2013, fishing Opens while at the same time competing on the FLW Tour.

He qualified for the 2016 Elite Series through the 2015 Bassmaster Central Opens, and made his Elite Series debut in 2016.  He finished the season in 88th place in the Toyota Angler Of the Year point standings, posting just three Top 50 finishes in nine events.

Clausen’s 2017 Elite Series season did not get off to a particularly auspicious start, as he finished dead last in the season opener at Cherokee Lake.   Since then, he has clawed his way back into Bassmaster Classic contention with four Top 50 finishes in the past seven Elite Series stops.

With two events remaining on the schedule (St. Clair and the TAOY Championship on Mille Lacs), Clausen sits in 40th place in the TAOY point standings and on the bubble for qualifying for the 2018 Bassmaster Classic on Lake Hartwell next March.  Should he qualify, it would be the first Classic of Clausen’s career since he won in 2006.

In today’s Tales From the Cast, Luke Clausen reflects on his career and talks about what it would be like to return to the Bassmaster Classic stage:
