BASSMASTER CLASSIC MEDIA DAY: BASS ZONE STYLE

Birmingham, AL – Friday marks the first day of competition at the 2014 Bassmaster Classic on Alabama’s Lake Guntersville.  The 55 anglers competing in the tournament have already faced wild weather swings, with low temperatures in the teens when they arrived last Friday to begin practice, and high temperatures in the upper 60s by the time practice concluded on Wednesday.

Regardless of the conditions, the general consensus among the competitors is that Classic weight records will be broken over the next week in Alabama, as the largemouth begin migrating to shallower water in preparation for the spawn.

On Thursday afternoon, the anglers gathered for Bassmaster Classic Media Day, and The BASS ZONE was on-location to ask all the tough questions.  Truth is, these guys are pretty tight-lipped when it comes to divulging specifics about the upcoming tournament.  Rather than badger them with repetitive questions and receive stock answers, The BZ decided to mix things up an ask some off-the-wall questions.

What follows is Bassmaster Classic Media Day coverage…..BASS ZONE style:

David Walker
The BZ: If you had to compare your Classic practice to an animal found in the zoo, what animal would you pick and why?
WALKER: "I would have to say a penguin, because I was frozen the entire time."

The BZ: Who was the best dressed or worst dressed angler at Wednesday’s Night Of Champions?
WALKER: "I was probably the best and the worst dressed. I am my own worst critic."

The BZ: Finish this sentence: Wednesday’s official practice day on Lake Guntersville reminded me of……
WALKER: "The Tennessee River."

The BZ: What is one question you are tired of being asked this week?
WALKER: "What is it going to take to win?"

The BZ: With the Winter Olympics in full swing, if you had to choose one of your fellow Classic competitors to be your pairs figure skating partner, who would you pick and why?
WALKER:  “I’d pick Aaron Martens, because he works out and is probably strong enough to lift me."

Mike Iaconelli
The BZ: If you had to compare your Classic practice to an animal found in the zoo, what animal would you pick and why?
IACONELLI: "It would be an anteater with the big trunk.  I have been running around in search mode sticking my trunk in a bunch of holes.”

The BZ: Who was the best dressed or worst dressed angler at Wednesday’s Night Of Champions?
IACONELLI: "I will have to say Brandon Palanuik was the best dressed, because he reminded me of a Members Only commercial from the 1980's."

The BZ: Finish this sentence: Wednesday’s official practice day on Lake Guntersville reminded me of……
IACONELLI: "It reminded me of a rubix cube that I only have two panels figured out on."

The BZ: What is one question you are tired of being asked this week?
IACONELLI: "I am sick of being asked if I have food in my beard."

The BZ: With the Winter Olympics in full swing, if you had to choose one of your fellow Classic competitors to be your pairs figure skating partner, who would you pick and why?
IACONELLI: "I want Mark Davis, simply because of his physique."

Jason Christie
The BZ: If you had to compare your Classic practice to an animal found in the zoo, what animal would you pick and why?
CHRISTIE: "The tortoise, because it takes so long to cover all of the fishable water on this lake."

The BZ: Who was the best dressed or worst dressed angler at Wednesday’s Night Of Champions?
CHRISTIE: "Cliff Crochet, “The Cajun” cleaned up nicely."

The BZ: Finish this sentence: Wednesday’s official practice day on Lake Guntersville reminded me of……
CHRISTIE: "It reminded me of Falcon Lake, because the fish are all quality."

The BZ: What is one question you are tired of being asked this week?
CHRISTIE: "How did your practice go?"

The BZ: With the Winter Olympics in full swing, if you had to choose one of your fellow Classic competitors to be your pairs figure skating partner, who would you pick and why?
CHRISTIE: "David Kilgore. The guy is really tall, so he could throw me up high in the air and catch me."

Chris Zaldain
The BZ: If you had to compare your Classic practice to an animal found in the zoo, what animal would you pick and why?
ZALDAIN: "I would say a zebra because it is black and white.  One minute it would be good and the next it wasn't."

The BZ: Who was the best dressed or worst dressed angler at Wednesday’s Night Of Champions?
ZALDAIN: "Gerald Swindle was looking pretty spiffy. He had like a plaid shirt and a silver vest deal going on. There were a few guys that need to reevaluate their style."

The BZ: Finish this sentence: Wednesday’s official practice day on Lake Guntersville reminded me of……
ZALDAIN: "The monkey box on Lake Okeechobee.  Lots of guys stuffed into little small areas."

The BZ: What is one question you are tired of being asked this week?
ZALDAIN: "How much weight is it going to take?"

The BZ: With the Winter Olympics in full swing, if you had to choose one of your fellow Classic competitors to be your pairs figure skating partner, who would you pick and why?
ZALDAIN: "How about Mike Iaconelli.  I hear he played a little bit of hockey like myself, so at least we both could skate."

Fred Roumbanis
The BZ: If you had to compare your Classic practice to an animal found in the zoo, what animal would you pick and why?
ROUMBANIS: "It would obviously be a Panda Bear, because I found the hydrilla Panda's lurking in the seas of bamboo on Lake Guntersville."

The BZ: Who was the best dressed or worst dressed angler at Wednesday’s Night Of Champions?
ROUMBANIS: "Brent Chapman looked pretty dang sharp, second to me of course. I’d have to say the worst dressed was anyone who wore a vest.”

The BZ: Finish this sentence: Wednesday’s official practice day on Lake Guntersville reminded me of……
ROUMBANIS: "Lake Guntersville in the early spring."

The BZ: What is one question you are tired of being asked this week?
ROUMBANIS: "Any question that pertains to what time it is and where we are supposed to be. I have no sense of direction or time, so I’ve just been going with the flow and hoping that I’m in the right place."

The BZ: With the Winter Olympics in full swing, if you had to choose one of your fellow Classic competitors to be your pairs figure skating partner, who would you pick and why?
ROUMBANIS: "It would have to be David Kilgore.  He is like 6' 9" and could just throw me in the air and twirl me like a little whirly bird."

Brandon Palaniuk
The BZ: If you had to compare your Classic practice to an animal found in the zoo, what animal would you pick and why?
PALANIUK: "It would be that monkey that is picking up its own poop and throwing it all over the place.”

The BZ: Who was the best dressed or worst dressed angler at Wednesday’s Night Of Champions?
PALANIUK: "Aaron Martens was easily the best dressed.  He was wearing a Prada suit, so that was pretty fancy.”

The BZ: Finish this sentence: Wednesday’s official practice day on Lake Guntersville reminded me of……
PALANIUK: "A psychiatric ward."

The BZ: What is one question you are tired of being asked this week?
PALANIUK: "Are you going to win?"

The BZ: With the Winter Olympics in full swing, if you had to choose one of your fellow Classic competitors to be your pairs figure skating partner, who would you pick and why?
PALANIUK: "David Kilgore, because he is like three feet taller than I am."

Gerald Swindle
The BZ: If you had to compare your Classic practice to an animal found in the zoo, what animal would you pick and why?
SWINDLE: "It would be a chimpanzee with the red ass doing a lot of hoping around and scratching.  Or maybe a panda bear, because it was kind of soft and didn't attack."

The BZ: Who was the best dressed or worst dressed angler at Wednesday’s Night Of Champions?
SWINDLE:  “I would have to say Aaron Martens was bringing it last night, the suit was looking good.”

The BZ: Finish this sentence: Wednesday’s official practice day on Lake Guntersville reminded me of……
SWINDLE: "My ex girlfriend - unpredictable and ugly."

The BZ: What is one question you are tired of being asked this week?
SWINDLE: "Do you think being from here is gonna help you?"

The BZ: With the Winter Olympics in full swing, if you had to choose one of your fellow Classic competitors to be your pairs figure skating partner, who would you pick and why?
SWINDLE: "I'd pick Skeet, because he has pretty hair."

Jordan Lee
The BZ: If you had to compare your Classic practice to an animal found in the zoo, what animal would you pick and why?
LEE: "I would have to say a tiger. Some days they are real aggressive, and some days they just want to sleep."

The BZ: Who was the best dressed or worst dressed angler at Wednesday’s Night Of Champions?
LEE: "He isn't an angler but I am going to have to say James Overstreet.  He was in all black and looking clean.  I was probably the worst by far.  Everybody was making fun of my white pants, but I thought they were khaki.  Evidently they were white."

The BZ: Finish this sentence: Wednesday’s official practice day on Lake Guntersville reminded me of……
LEE: "My ex-girlfriend - always being moody."

The BZ: What is one question you are tired of being asked this week?
LEE: "What has your brother taught you about fishing this tournament?"

The BZ: With the Winter Olympics in full swing, if you had to choose one of your fellow Classic competitors to be your pairs figure skating partner, who would you pick and why?
LEE: "I would choose Brandon Palaniuk.  He is small and agile, so I could twirl him around."
