ROLAND MARTIN INJURED DURING TARPON BATTLE

Story by Dru Smith

Clewiston, FL—Jimmy Houston’s remark, at the recent Wal-Mart FLW Tour event on the Potomac River, about Roland Martins fishing injury has sparked some internet discussion about the legendary fisherman’s health.

The BASS ZONE caught up with FLW touring angler Scott Martin as he headed through the Pennsylvania Mountains en route to the Detroit River. Scott assured us that Roland is in good spirits after breaking his foot on a recent Tarpon Fishing trip in the Florida Keys.

“He is actually scheduled for surgery in the next day or so,” said Scott. “He had a hundred pound Tarpon on the line and was attempting to bring it in the boat. He lost his footing and jammed his foot against the sidewall of the boat. He ended up in the bottom of the boat with a broken ankle and the 100 lb tarpon on top of him.”

Roland suffered a severe break to his ankle, which was described to Scott as “pointing 90 degrees the wrong way.” The nine time BASS AOY reset his broken foot and made it back to the marina. He is scheduled for surgery to place metal plates in his ankle.

“He is doing fine just bored out of his mind,” Scott revealed. “He has never been one to sit around and he is having a hard time not being out on the water.” Roland is expected to make a full recovery and be back on the water soon.
