Plattsburgh, N.Y. – Denny Brauer proved the pre game prognosticators who spoke of smallmouth bass and clear water tactics wrong when he smashed a little bit more than 80 pounds of largemouth bass by flipping in the cover laden shallows of Missiquoi Bay.
According to Jason Stoddard, a tournament angler and Lake Champlain guide from St. Albans, Vt., Brauer and the rest of the flippers on tour will probably not like what they see when they get there.
“The lake was higher than normal last year and the reeds and willows that Denny
[Brauer] was fishing had five feet of water under them,” Stoddard told The BASS ZONE. “Right now there is only about two feet of water there, and the fish aren’t in there nearly as thick as they were a year ago.”
Stoddard, a Skeeter Boats State Team member who volunteered to use his boat as the floating office for BASS ZONE’s on location coverage of the 2006 Champions Choice; recently fished a BFL Tournament at Champlain and finished in 6th place with a solid 15-pound, 10-ounce bag of smallmouth bass. |

“The lake is fishing very differently than last year, and I truly feel that the smallmouth experts are going to be more of a factor,” Stoddard reported. “The weeds in the south end of the lake are pretty thick, and if a largemouth pattern is productive, it should be down there, but I think smallies will be more of a factor .”
Whatever happens, you can bet that a lot of fish will be caught, and BASS ZONE viewers will be the first to know, because BASS ZONE .com will be there with our usual on the water, on location coverage of the Bassmaster Elite Series Champions Choice begins July 12 from Plattsburgh N.Y. It’s All About Being There… Stay Tuned.
