THE FINAL DAY.....QUOTES FROM THE CLASSIC FIELD

Story by Brent Conway and  Dru Smith

Russ Lane 24th: 32-0
“I knew that I wasn’t in contention to win, so I just stayed in a handful of areas and picked it apart. I didn’t want to mess anyone’s chances up, so I tried to stay out of the way. I don’t think there’s anything I could have done differently. I wish that the conditions would have been a little bit different, but I couldn’t have won doing what I was doing. I ran the entire lake looking for that big school, but I never found them.”

Royce Dennington 21st: 34-10
“I wish the weather forecast would have been correct. I didn’t know anything about flipping the grass when it was sunny. I stuck with what I had been doing and managed to put together a little limit, but it wasn’t nearly enough. The week has been just amazing – it’s really cool to have made it to the final day.”

Jeff Kreit 15th: 36-6
“I caught them good today, and had a limit real fast. I ran up the lake to flip mats for the last three hours and managed to cull, but it wasn’t anywhere what I needed. There are a couple things that I would do differently if I had the chance, but I fished hard and had a lot of fun. If you can’t win the thing, at least you can have fun.”

Todd Faircloth 18th: 35-11
“I caught about the same amount of fish that I’ve been catching all week, but for some reason I caught a couple of real nice ones. I don’t know what changed, or what I was doing differently…would’ve been nice to have been able to do it the first couple days, whatever it was. All my fish this week were caught on the same bait that I won Table Rock on with, an 1/8 oz shaky head.

James Niggemeyer 17th: 35-13
“Yesterday I left my numbers area looking for a bigger bite, and I think I should have stayed in there a little bit longer. I stayed today, because the weather was different. I was flipping grass and throwing a little spinnerbait around a flat.”

Mike Wurm 11th: 37-9
“I had a good time. I caught 30 keepers today, but struggled to get a bigger limit – just culled ounces for ounces. If I could’ve gotten a four pounder, that would have helped me out a bunch. The shakey head worm help me out all week, and I’m not disappointed about the tournament at all…I just wish that I could have figured out the largemouth and gotten a bigger bite.”

Jared Lintner 19th: 35-6
“I knew that I was going to have to make a change or two in order to make any difference. I switched up to a Sweet Beaver, and got three on it, but they weren’t the four- and five-pounders I needed. I wish that I could’ve figured out the grass bite more. I never really keyed at all on the grass because it wasn’t a factor at all during practice. The Classic was a great learning experience.”

Dean Rojas 10th: 37-13
“It went really well out there today. I lost two good fish or I would have weighed in around 17 pounds. I had three primary patterns working this week – I threw a frog, a spinnerbait and little finesse worm. Two of my better fish came on the frog today.”

Mike McClelland 11th: 37-5
“I had a little tougher day today. I threw a stick bait most of the week, but today I relied more on the jig. The bass just didn’t bite as well as they had been. I feel good about what I did; I made it to the final day and that was a goal. I struggled on the first day, rallied on the second day and then finished strong. I was a more comfortable at this Classic than I have been in the past. I’m looking forward to the next four or five.”

Alton Jones 22nd: 33-15
”I put every rod I had on the deck today, and had a different bait tied on every one of them. During practice and throughout the tournament, I never had a bite over three pounds. Just the same, 24 pounds was what I needed so it was the mark I was shooting for out there if I wanted to have a shot at winning, which is possible, but I just wasn’t ever able to a big bite.”

Timmy Horton 16th: 36-00
“I decided that I was going to fish for largemouth pretty much all Sunday, and that’s what I did. I caught one good one flipping – about a four pounder – and a three-pound spot. I don’t know, I moved around a lot and tried to find some good locations trying to gamble because. I was surprised my spotted bass ran out like they did yesterday and again today. A few more key bites here and there and it would have been interesting.”

Kevin VanDam 3rd: 45-4
“I’ve never fished as fast during the final day of the Classic than I did today…I fished my guts out all day long. I have absolutely nothing left in the gas tank, I mean I’m all done after today.”

Randy Howell 13th: 36-15
”The day today was a little bit better than yesterday, but not by a whole lot. I only caught six keepers today. I think after the first day, after all the noise and boat traffic, my fish just turned off. Being that it was the Classic, I knew that if the fish bit like they did the first day, I could win it. If it would have been any other tournament, I would have left looking for another place, or there wouldn’t have been as much traffic up there…either way, I should have left my water up river and went looking.”
